Simpler

Simpler plays one sample and pitches it up and down the keyboard. It is intentionally the smallest control surface in the app — pick a sound, set a level, shape it with the filter, and play. When you want a recognisable texture without designing it, this is the quickest route.

Choosing a sample

The sample picker offers a set of bundled sounds covering bass, synth, pad, moog, acid and vinyl textures. Selecting a new one swaps the instrument's voice immediately, leaving your notes untouched — so you can write a part and then audition it through several different samples.

How pitching works

Simpler has one recording and transposes it to whatever note you play. Playing well above the sample's natural pitch shortens and brightens it; playing well below stretches and darkens it. Extreme transposition is an effect in its own right rather than a fault.

Gain

Sets the instrument's output level before it reaches the mixer channel.

Filter

Simpler shares the same low-pass filter card as the Synth, with cutoff and resonance. Rolling the cutoff back is the easiest way to sit a sample behind other parts in a mix.

Effects

The full effects chain is available, which is where most of Simpler's character comes from — a dry sample plus delay and chorus goes a long way.

Simpler vs. the Recorder

Simpler plays sounds that ship with Jam Club. If you want the same behaviour with your own audio — recorded from a microphone or line input, or uploaded from a file — use the Recorder instead. It offers the same editor with capture, waveform display and tempo-warping added.
